Writer's picture: Kelly VanZantKelly VanZant
Olivia was diagnosed with dyslexia in third grade, and her journey through school was filled with ups and downs. However, with the help of supportive teachers, assistive technology, and a lot of hard work, Olivia not only graduated high school but was accepted into her dream college. Her story is a testament to the power of determination and the right support system in overcoming learning challenges.

How Olivia Overcame the Challenges of Dyslexia:

 • The Role of Assistive Technology:

Early in her academic journey, Olivia struggled with reading comprehension and writing assignments. However, everything changed when she was introduced to assistive technology. Using speech-to-text software, Olivia was able to dictate her essays instead of typing them, which allowed her to focus on her ideas rather than the mechanics of writing. She also used audiobooks to complete her reading assignments, which made it easier for her to process and retain information. These tools transformed Olivia’s academic experience, enabling her to keep up with her peers and excel in her studies.

 • Building Confidence Through Supportive Teachers:

Olivia credits much of her success to her teachers, who provided her with the encouragement and accommodations she needed to thrive. One of her teachers, in particular, went out of their way to ensure that Olivia had access to the resources that would help her succeed, from extra time on exams to alternative ways of demonstrating her knowledge. This support helped Olivia build her confidence and realize that her dyslexia didn’t define her academic abilities.

 • Preparing for College with the Right Support:

As Olivia prepared for college, she worked closely with her high school counselors to find a university that offered strong support services for students with learning differences. She researched schools that provided accommodations like extended test times, note-taking assistance, and access to assistive technology. With her strong academic record and a powerful personal statement about overcoming dyslexia, Olivia was accepted into her top-choice school, where she plans to study creative writing.

Conclusion:

Olivia’s success story is an inspiration to students with dyslexia and other learning disabilities. With determination, the right technology, and a supportive network, Olivia was able to turn her challenges into opportunities and achieve her dreams.
